Ad-Hoc Facility Management Based on a Smart Things Infrastructure
Research Demo of the Distributed Systems Group

The idea of making things smart by attaching small electronic devices like RFID-chips to them (used as an entry point into the world of additional information and services) builds up the basis for this work. A system for ad-hoc room reservations and facilities management (e.g., for academic environments) was developed on top of an already existing infrastructure for Smart Cooperative Objects. In addition to extending the original framework, it offers the possibility for on-spot communication with an object's virtual counterparts. By scanning an affixed RFID-chip, users can make changes to an objects inventory status or ask for direct help with an unfamiliar or broken object. For that purpose, a PDA was equipped with an RFID reading device to enable spontaneous access, completion, or adjustment of object or room information, as well as for providing direct interaction with an object. This demo was created in July 2004.
