Current Project

A new student usually lies low trying to make sense of his environment. G.D. Vigneshwar of Std. IX joined Rukmani Vidyalaya Matric. H.S. School, Kilpauk, in late June. But he already is trying to make the environment of his school different. And his way to do so is to start an Eco Club in the school.

"Earlier I studied in a boarding school in Bangalore and another one in Kotagiri. There was so much greenery there that this came as a shock to me. I thought that maybe I could do something to make the school a greener place. And that's how the idea of the Eco Club was born," he smiles.

Vigneshwar's first step in launching his club was to hold "Eco Trivia" an intra-school quiz. "It was fun and we also learnt many things while researching to conduct the quiz," he says. When he first thought of the club, he spoke to his principal and the correspondent of the school, who gave him the green signal.

Green ideas

They agreed to provide funds for his activities inside the school. "I want to convert the space in the backyard into a garden. Apart from providing some much-required greenery on the campus, it will also help us with our biology classes. Practicals, see," he grins. His ideas involve keeping the school premises clean and planting more trees. "We'll start small. It won't do to make big plans and then see them fizzle out."

His "big plans" include a students' rally on the use of CNG and organic fuel. "CNG is big time in Delhi and other places but not in Chennai. It's so much cleaner, so we should be promoting it." Another idea is an anti-plastic campaign involving the many departmental stores and other shops around the school. "We can conduct an awareness programme on the side effects of using plastic and on the availability of eco-friendly alternatives." He also wants to have workshops and campaigns in rural areas on issues like hygiene and environmental issues. "But that will have to wait till we get going," he says.

How much he achieves remains to be seen, but Vigneshwar needs to be appreciated for taking the first step.
